Deck Change History

A deck where I test out the two duels from Twisted Loyalties. I always enjoyed Phoenix's ability to blast fate away with its characters and void rings, and both duels play well into that strategy because the core characters like Fearsome Mystic and Isawa Ujina are already political powerhouses.
Now, both of those duels don't really do much towards conflicts, so I went with a Crane splash to get Storied Defeat as a means to make the duels hurt a lot more. I also was already running Maezawa because of his political prowess so I added a light courtier theme.
Deck has been doing well thus far. Still wondering about the restricted card. Maybe I cut the magistrate's intervention and one other card for consumed by five fires. On the other hand, consumed by five fires overlaps with what my deck is already good at, so it could be overkill, and I'd be better off taking embrace the void.
I like it!
I've been working on something very similar. I hadn't quite settled on a splash and was using unicorn with favoured mount (for mystic and anti-covert tech) and ring of binding for fate econ.
I had initially thought that Return the Offense would be too much political stand, but its a political duel to stand in any conflict, so thats a great spot.
Love the inclusion of storied defeat also, and I agree that CbFF is a little overkill on the fate removal side of things (I had found so). I've been using DoP though haven't drawn it too much in my games.
I do love me a unicorn splash. Movement and a good 1 drop is a welcome inclusion in most Phoenix decks. Unicorn splash is usually where I will include sage of gisei toshi as another card that goes well with movement, and then I'd have a good set-up to start sending people home pretty reliably. Ring of binding is an interesting card to take for sure, though I wonder if Invocation of fire could be better because of how it synergizes with duels. There's even some trickery with it and make your case: Move it over to a big character with no fate on it, then make your case to keep that character and the attachment around.
Return the Offense's second mode, where it prevents a ready effect has been pretty amazing with any of the bow effects in the deck. I really like it, especially since I was already about political duels.
I'll keep display of power in mind. It was not the biggest player of it in the day, but maybe that's why I should include it, just to take people off-guard. Then again, I do want to get Hantei 38th in play, so maybe I should just go with the fate generation from embrace the void.
I have really been liking Crane for storied defeat in particular. It makes it so that my opponent has to question if it is going to follow any one of these duels that might not look so important to the current conflict otherwise.
