Deck Strategy
Hello Internet,

Here is my deck list from the Toronto Kotei. Nothing too special and is pre-CoTE meta, so the deck will change, but here it is.
I suppose things that stand out are:

Dynasty:

1X Kaede, 1X Atsuko and 1X Tetsu.
I never bought Kaede or Atsuko all tournament. I have found myself buying Atsuko less and less, added Kaede last minute for blowout potential she has. Considered buying her once (Game 2 vs Crab), but never did. Atsuko only ever turned up turn 1 so I never bought her.
Tetsu was bought twice and I actually think I enjoy him as 1x. Never invested in him, and him not being a shugenja doesnt matter so much cause his buff keeps storm equal in raw but divided between characters (which is occasionally really useful).

1x Palace is much more to stop my opponent getting the favor then getting it for me. Have been tempted to replace with Imperial Store number 3.
And speaking of imperial storehouse, once I figured out the field would be 20% Phoenix, I should have replaced them with Secluded Shrines, not having them for the mirror sucked (played 3 mirrors).

Dynasty: MVP - Isawa Tadaka (If you don't think this card is beyond broken, you are wrong)

Conflict:
41 cards total. Even though I did this, its bad. I should have cut to 40 cards but didn't get enough practice to figure out what I really wanted to cut. Obvious choices seemed to be Karmic Twist or Assassination, but the blowout potential for them was too high. Was very close to cutting court games entirely (1 less for 40 cards, 1 for a censure). Didn't like that, so here is the deck.

Conflict MVP: It should be Consumed by Five Fires, but Karmic Twist had some real blow outs, so I am saying Embrace the Void. I am greedy and want all the fate.

Tournament Breakdown:

Round 1 vs Justin Cheng - Crab, Keeper of Water, Unicorn Splash
Crab was actually one of my bigger worries coming into this tournament just because I haven't play crab much since they got KoW. First turn, I have Dreamer and Solemn Scholar and Kanjo and Favorable ground, I am first player. Buy both with 1 fate, go earth on Dreamer both attack political win earth ring, stop counter conflict, win favor. Kanjo online. Next turn I Embrace the void and karmic twist to wipe his board and its over. Win.

Round 2 vs Daniel Baker - Crab, Keeper of Water, Unicorn Splash
More Crabs, fun. This game proves to be much harder. I am first player, have a weaker start, have to deal with t1 Satoshi and Palace. First turn just a lot of posturing but no attacks. Next turn the Satoshi tower is born. 2 Spyglass, Watch Commander, crab has to attack as they see I have a Tadaka and massive amount of fate to save for next turn buy. I let go watch commander, he plays another, I let go it again. Ok so far so good. I defend the rest of the turn to keep my Tadaka, Embrace and Five fires my opponent to kill all but Satoshi and buy a 4 fate Tadaka next turn. Iuchi wayfinde into cloud. I am sad. At this point he is able to keep Satoshi alive through dupes and Tadaka isn't turning anything off. Trying to gain advantage by just forcing my opponent to play cards, flushing my provinces every turn for Miya Mystic. He decides he rather hide in a corner. 5 turns of Tadaka does very little beyond stats, Satoshi gets into 2 conflicts a turn for all the card draw. I only survive this game cause of Kudaka for Air rings and my higher overall stats (Satoshi milled all the Kisadas). Eventually my opponents runs out tricks and I can break. I don't think that Satoshi ever died. Win.

Round 3 - Zachary Devine - Phoenix, Kyuden Isawa, Seeker of Air, Dragon Splash
Mirror match. Kill me now. I go first, Prodigy of the Waves 3 fate staring down just a solemn scholar. My opponent just passes and bows me with AtW. Smart move, I am idiot for leaving myself vulnerable to it. I embrace my prodigy to get some fate back, into T2 down 6 fate, equal on cards, a better board presence. He has an AtW in the bin. I actually feel kinda ok with this. Next turn buy some small bodies, save up a lot of fate. Have a water conflict where we play 4 Karmic Twists to try to kill / save my Prodigy (silly Ningyos don't try to betray me like that). Prodigy eats 2 cloud (1 is let goed). Turn ends, opponent has favor, I have fate advantage, prodigy is dead (meditation and void ring). Opponent has clarity, storm, 2 clouds and atw in the bin. I flip Tadaka x 2. Buy him with 7 fate and dupe for extra. Tadaka gets embraced in draw phase. I let go fearing the inevitable. He doesn't five fires. During the conflict phase, Maidens for the five fires and I think 2 other spells. Thank the Kami for 8 fate Tadaka. He eats five fires anyway, but game is solitaire at this point. Win.

Have a break, very appreciated cause I feel spent. Got delicious Turkish food. Pumped and ready for round 4.

Round 4: Jun Yu Jerry Zhou - Scorpion, City of the Open hand, Seeker of Air, Crane splash
Feel good about this match. Boy was I wrong. T1, 2 miya mystics, Library, solemn scholar. I am first player. Buy Solemn with 1. Opponent buys Ignoble Enforcers and a courtier no fate. I am praying to draw Karmic Twist for a blowout. Spoiler, I never draw it. I poke earth to bait the ignoble defense. Hit Manicured gardens. I am ok with this. Opponent wins ring, counter attacks void, I DoP and learn they are on Edict splash. OK, I can deal with this. Pitch the Miya Mystics, start fishing for Tadaka and MoGT. Get MoGT. Have a five fires and a he attacks me the MoGT fire ring. Has 5 fate of character on the board. No ETV, and I am scared of Kikuyo so i don't do it. So I defend, invest 2 katanas then MoGT eats Mark of Shame/SBR/Noble Sac. I am sad. Next turn I see Tadaka. I still have a lot of fate build up, noble sac, edict and censure in the bin. Buy him 4 fate. He clouds. Turn 3 of 5+ cards a turn no let gos. Well this is going well. Survive the turn by nothing really happens. Kudaka shows up next, draws me some cards buys me some honor, but all I am seeing is my Embrace the voids. Long short of it, switch to low bid, I only see 1 let go and learn he didn't run Kikuyo. I lose.

Round 5: Kyle Michalek - Crab, Keeper of Water, Scorpion Splash
Turn one I buy Solemn and Dreamer with 1 fate. He buys Suichi with 2 fate and a Kaiu Envoy. He bids one. Ok something is different here. Dreamer earth attacks with solemn, I win conflict. Earth ring removes A Fate Worse then Death. Everything starts adding up. I poke another conflict with a shrine maiden to try and get him to use cards, which he does. Still win an air ring. Win Favor. Next turn Library Kudaka and Kanjo. Game is textbook at this point. Win.

Round 6: Steven Krauskopf - Phoenix, Seeker of Air, Kyuden Isawa Dragon Splash
Perfect way to end the day. A mirror to figure out if I make the cut. I go first with not much in my row facing down a Secluded Shrine ( I really wish I put them in my deck) and Solemn scholar in my opponents row. I just pass. He buys Tsuki no fate. Just wins favor. Next turn sees another Solemn Scholar and dreamer. I buy Prodigy with 4 fate and just defend for this turn. Next turn I buy a bunch of bodies for glory, dont attack to try and steal favor back, had seen a censure already and wasnt about to figure out if he had more. He breaks upholding authority. I remove 2 clouds. I win favor. I get Tadaka(8fate again) and Kanjo Online. Have to deal with Seclude Shrines still for Tadaka, but I haven't used many resources. 3 Fish water ring break it. Tadaka is online, I have a Let go in my hand if the 3rd Cloud shows. I am safe. I win.

Day 2:
Top 8: Travis McDaniel - Phoenix, Kyuden Isawa, Seeker of Air, Dragon Splash
Well the one match I really really really didn't want play. Honestly I don't remember the particulars of this match too much. I am super stressed. Trying to be conservative. I know I don't have to deal with Ningyos but have to deal with Censures. I lose 2 provinces, Travis loses none. I get Tadaka, I get favor. I get Kanjo. Travis still almost wins, I have to survive on KM for 2 turns. I win but feel bad. Morale I got extremely lucky and beat a better player. Win.

Top 4: Yanik Richard - Crane, Seeker of Fire, Dragon Splash
Here is the other match I really didn't want to play. Yanik is my friend and from my local play group. The match is on stream (which I really didn't want to do but Yanik convinced me so all thanks to him), so isn't much to say. Karmic Twist did work. Tadaka is OP. Win

Finals: Max Williams - Crab, Keeper of Water, Unicorn Splash
Final match, Crab, a matchup I am feeling good about after day 1. Again the matchup is on stream. Get really lucky with no double reprieve or iron mine so tower with 2 spyglass, watch commander and talisman dies turn 2 thanks to bad flip on meditations. Don't see my let gos early, don't activate a shrine maiden cause I am scared of losing a let go. (which I do activate for a second shrine maiden, who of course wiffs and costs me a let go). I see all 3 of my Miya Mystics and Kudaka tower does work. I win.

In conclusion, the weekend was a blast. Phoenix is very strong. The mirror is cancer. I got incredibly lucky [I got Tadaka when I needed him (6 of 9 matchups and Kanjo in 4 of 9)]. Only way the weekend goes better is the Habs don't shit the bed Saturday night. Eitherway, thanks to all my opponents for fun games, all the people I hung out with, and Montreal L5R seen keeping me sharp. Hope to see you all again at Worlds.

If people have any questions, post them here or ask on Discord, will try to answer honestly.

Cheers,
Matthew Beck, Isawa Algahra
