Deck Strategy
First off, all credit for the deck goes to poogin. I had been playing variants of Palumbo.dec and it just wasn't feeling great against Lion/Unicorn super towers. I had been testing Softskin because it actually does put in some work in that matchup and also the meme potential. Unfortunately Lion can frequently withstand the honor loss. Sometimes you can't assassinate Shuffles the Goblin every time he shows up and you just rumble. Sometimes you play something other than super towers and you die while cursing the Softskins in your hand.

I messaged poogin asking for some advice and he sent me the dishonor list he'd been playing and he game me some tips and helped me test a little. Shout out to him for all the help and being an all around cool guy. I decided I wasn't good enough to question the deck list so I played it as is.

Round 1 - Luke Macdowall - Scorpion City of Open Hand Keeper of Earth
Mirror match. Awesome. It was early and I don't remember the game super well. I got him down to super low honor but had 4 or 5 cards in hand. If I recall he was on AFWTD and that just suffers in the mirror against Forged Edict. My anti-tower cards ended up doing work in the dishonor mirror and I was able to close it out. If I hadn't I was out of good cards and he would have killed me next turn for sure. 1-1

Round 2 - Chris Pottorf - Scorpion City of the Open Hand Keeper of Earth
Mirror again. Same box, same role. Okaaaay. This one we both went off pretty quickly. He got new Shoju out and we raced to the bottom. Last round he still had Shoju and we were both super low. He had Duty, I didn't. I Forged Edict and he Censures it. Shoju kills me. I curse my big brain as he reminds me that had I bought the Shoju I flipped that turn he would have lost the favor and not been able to cancel my Forged Edict. He does soften the blow by tossing me his koku since he says he destroys his cards by shuffling like a maniac anyhow and doesn't care about promos. 1-1

Round 3 - Joey Goldstein - Crane Kyuden Kakita Seeker of Air
Finally a break from the mirror. Joey is a really new player and was pretty good for only having played a few weeks. Without seeing his deck I didn't feel like he made any obvious play mistakes and he had great instincts. Unfortuntely my deck felt bad for the loss and wanted to take it out on the Crane. My whole hand was pretty much Way of the Scorpion, For Shame, Court Games, Assassination, and Stolen Breath. I also flopped 4 1 cost characters turn 1. I killed his cheap guys, dishonored his bigger guys, bought a bunch of cheap guys and burned down his provinces. 2-1

Round 4 - Scott Fisher - Scorpion City of the Open Hand Keeper of Earth
...

Yup.

Another mirror. Scott was playing what seemed a pretty standard Palumbo.dec variation, which my deck actually techs pretty hard against it as a result of the anti-tower cards. Displays of Power, Assassinations, and cancels were exchanged, but I saw multiple Fiery Madness and Stolen Breath so my political attacks couldn't be defended and his pokes did nothing. 3-1

Round 5 - Dustin Horn - Phoenix Isawa Mori Seido Seeker of Void
This is a pretty even matchup for me. Losing Mark of Shame and AFWTD means we can't shut down their people as hard, but I usually feel like I have a fighting chance. Unfortunately here I just couldn't get it together. As Tadaka came out I couldn't kill him and he did what he does. Early on he got all 3 Let Go and I had no cancels so my awful attachments did mostly nothing. He got on top of me and was able to answer everything I could throw at him. 3-2

Found out all the non-Fro Ttop Scorps finished 3-2 so we just had to wait around for all the results to get recorded to see the ranking. I ended up beating Luke out for clan challenger by 0.27 SoS so I finally made the cut at an L5R event. Finished top of those that didn't cut at 7th, got my prizes, and hopped into a pod to get some sweet sweet koku and see how many Elegant Tessen I could play in the Dragon deck I brought.

Day 2 - Top 16 - Will Harrison - Lion Kyuden Ikoma Keeper of Air
We were both sweating this match as this is the deck I was more worried about after faceplanting into it dozens of times with more traditional Scorpion thanks to top 4 Lion Chris Pepe who is in our local play group and he had apparently not tested very much against current Scorpion. After 1 person died to deck check and 2 others died to not showing up, we got to it. He tried to break my provinces and I tried to stop that. I could never get his honor in a precarious position so I tried to build a big board and break provinces with the help of Stolen Breath and Pacifism. Had I not saved my cancels for Prepare for War the game would have been over in 5 minutes. Instead it went to time. I got the first province and fought him off mine for several turns. A Kitsu Moto with a Favored Mount, Finger of Jade, two Tactical Ingenuity, plenty of fate and possible another attachment got double attached and just stood around for multiple turns. Luckily I had burned my Censures because I no longer had the favor that game. At time we were each at one broken province and he had more honor and the favor. Figured I might have the cards to break some so we played it out. He shut me down and it was done. Found out my last two cards in my deck were both For Shame. I did not see nearly enough straighten so they would have probably won me the game instead of the three Goblin Sneaks I had the whole game but never needed to play because he managed his fate well. Next turn he would have board wiped and I would have drawn through my deck but had enough honor after the bid to be able to Duty the honor loss from my reshuffle. I would have gone in with 5 people to his 0 and got a good dynasty flop. But this is the world we live in. I wasn't able to capitalize on my early advantage and close it out. Coffee is for closers only.

All in all I had a great time, met some great people, got enough koku to get the cards I wanted, and finally made that cut in L5R. I already got farther than I expected so that fact that I couldn't pay the iron price for a top 2 hatamoto is totally fine with me.

About the actual cards:
MVPs:

All my 1 cost characters - When I flopped all 3 against my Crane opponent and he had to read them because he wasn't that familiar I felt super bad telling him that they all drew cards one way or another.

All my attachments - People forgot Fiery Madness exists and it effectively negates the stat bonuses of 2 or more attachments the super tower plays. It also makes many of the bodies Scorpion uses to poke into potatoes so it's nice in that matchup as well. Pacifism and Stolen Breath are expensive, have answers, and don't work with every deck, but they did what they needed to do in multiple matchups.

Favored Niece - Turns out when you can run hyper specific meta cards and Niece them away when you draw dead you get to live in the magical Scorpion world where there are no consequences for your actions.

Pleasant surprises:

Blackmail Artist - Usually these guys are just kind of there and 2 costs more than 1 so they hang out in provinces most of the time. But when you run Forged Edict instead of AFWTD you have effectively infinite fate by turn 3. They took many honor and broke many provinces with the help of Stolen Breath.

Bayushi Dairu - I wasn't sure about this guy since he doesn't do much in the Crane matchup but I didn't want to think about it too much and left him in. He never showed up against Crane. Very few of my other opponents got a body honored bur every time he showed up shortly after to steal and start defending or taking provinces.

Duds:

Ignoble Enforcers - I get what this guy is for. He can get you back into Alibi Artist and box range and with all the extra fate from not playing AFWTD I often find myself taking stronghold faster than finishing the dishonor win. Unfortunately I usually saw him early when I prefer my 1 drops, or later in the game where I already have a big board and just want to keep flooding the board. Might swap him out for a cheaper body to keep the swarm up (should I play Those Who Serve?), maybe Shosuro Takao.

Goblin Sneak - Let me start by saying I would not take him out at all. Generally he dunks on people and usually shows up to steal the solitary fate someone has turn 1 and let me get an additional poke or surprise Banzai break. A couple of games early on he did exactly that. But every other game he flooded my hand as soon as I had enough bodies to not need a poker and when my opponent had enough fate that it didn't matter.
