Deck Strategy
This is the deck that I brought to the Kotei in Dusseldorf. Managed to placed 58th overall in a field of 130 players, going 4-3 with 39 points. Could have placed 10-15 spots above if not for some sloppy triggers management (more on this in the report). That's a success for me, considering that I've been playing once or twice a month since the start of 2018. =)

The Kotei itself was very well organized. Attended together with a good friend of mine from the Bulgarian meta and after 14-15 games over 2 days, our interest in the game surged to record high. That is even before the RL announced, which makes things even more healthy.

About this deck... First I decided to play Kyuuden Isawa because I was expecting fewer people to run it, compared to Isawa Mori Seidou. Imagine my surprise when I saw the registrations on the lotus pavilion. If any of you know my ID already, then you know I wasn't going to run the top meta choice for splash, which was Dragon. Unicorn was giving some very solid results for me, while flying somewhat under the radar for most people. During the weekend I met and played a lot of Phoenix players and I want to give you the details what this decks does differently.

1) Spell Consistency. When I opted to play Shrine Maidens to give card advantage, I didn't want any dead triggers. For this I've went for maximum amount of spells that make sense. This turned out to be quite good decision because in my mirrors my opponents were discarding Let Gos, Furys, Banzais, Court Games while I was building Card Advantage. Compared to me, I never had a trigger with less than 2 spells from it.

2) 3x Talisman of the Sun. In the deck that I ran on Day 1 (main event) I had 3 talismans and 0 Iuchi Wayfinders. This is mostly to compliment my province choice and was essential key to my strategy. Punishing my opponent on provinces that aren't suited for him was to stall the game to mid game, when I have board and tons of spells in my hand. Only counter to this is Pathfinder's blade and as fate demanded it, my first 3 matches were against the only clan that splashes Crab exclusively. Yes, talking about them Dragons.

3) Compared with the other Phoenix/Unicorn I met and talked with, my board is a bit more vertical/expensive, but only slightly. On Day 2 (Proving Grounds) I opted for a wider board with more chuds and it definitely felt stronger.

4) Inquisitive Ishika is a monster. This is very tightly linked to the first point I made, Spell Consistency. I didn't see other Phoenix running her, however one game she came close to saving me 10 fate. That is sick and my already expensive conflict deck was struggling when I didn't see her. Keep an eye out for this lady, she will get milked more/as often than/as Tadaka. Very close on power levels.
