The dynasty mulligan depends on the opposing faction. Against crab, I am looking for one of the 8 1 or 2 drops to start with. Against everyone else, I hope to start turn one with buying a 3 or 4 drop with 3 fate. I [continue reading] also look for a secluded shrine because it fuels a bunch of cards, but I will only do so when one of the cards before the mulligan wants them. For example, I will look for Secluded Shrine when I have a solemn scholar pre-mulligan.

On the conflict side, the usual suspects are a court games, one of the ready effects (Tadaka, Atw, Clarity) and two attachments. Again, against the likes of crab or scorpion (or air role crane), I will mulligan for embrace the void if possible.

Isawa Tsuke is a neat card for a honor strategy, but here I think each of the 4 drops are playing a pretty important role, and Tsuke has redundancy with Acolyte of Koyane and Inferno Guard Invoker. I would play Tsuke if I was all about playing a bunch of 1 or 2 drops. Right now, I have a lot of 3s and 4s, but those aren't cards you can easily amass. Tsuke likes seeing many bodies, too, but I am also playing Solitary Strength in here which wants me to pile my fate rather than spread it around.
If I were doing this, I would play Kami Unleashed alongside it however. Thanks for the suggestion! I am sure I will make a list for it with a bunch of cheap characters one of these days. :)

The cards selected here all help the current conflict asides from the odd display of power in the conflict side. It traded its ready cards for cards that add strength to the conflict. I think this is a very defensive list with that talisman, pacifism [continue reading] and spyglass. The ready effect is built-in with that prodigy of the waves, which is the best platform for spyglass. Having said that, this does not look like a deck that does multiple attacks a turn. It should be happy with doing one attack per turn with the likes of haughty magistrate or prodigy of the waves, probably on a fire or water ring. It also limits resources from the opponent with spyglass.

I think the other ready effect in Elegant Tessen is pretty neat too here. Even a lowly keeper initiate can get to the heights of 6/6 stats with the elegant tessen, an honor effect and the stronghold.

Those are my thoughts on how this operates.

That is an excellent question. Jurojin's curse is supposed to be used when your board is fading except for a keeper initiate that you are keeping unbowed for grabbing the favor with. Jurojin's curse will, in that situation, cost you a keeper initiate [continue reading] while fading the opponent's entire board an extra time.

I agree that it is a tricky card. I am currently playing it because I want to see how frequently I can get my mileage out of that card's ability. It is likely better when I try to do this with cards like charge so that I can project power that was not sticking around anyway.

Really, I am considering just running ornate fans over it if my games keep playing out with me having the stickier board.

Overall, this looks pretty solid to me. The main thing would be trimming that conflict deck to 40 cards (I think you can easily toss the Scavenger or defend your honor).

As another shugenja player that doesn't play Kyuden Isawa, I would [continue reading]recommend finding room for Finger of Jade if you see that you are keeping your big characters in play for a couple of turns. It solves a lot of problems when you need to maintain big characters.

Dynasty-wise, I would think about cutting a couple of characters for the Shinjo Gunso (Example -1 Kudaka, -1 Blackadder, -1 Master of the Swift waves). The Gunso's second body helps flipping provinces face-up and as a side effect it enables your recursion. As for Shinjo Yasamura, I think it is fine to just play 2 copies of a cheap unique, since flipping up a duplicate of a cheap character isn't something you want.

Province-wise, I would give appealing to the fortunes a chance instead of pilgrimage. Pilgrimage isn't very good when you are playing display of power. As a stronghold province it is okay, but I imagine Khan's Ordu is an even better stronghold province.

Overall, looks nice!

If I am making some guesses, I would assume the [continue reading]2 Hantei are to make the Crane matchup easier for Phoenix (as well as a bunch of other matchups), The split between katana and ornate fan favor ornate fan due to policy debate and you're running three tadaka because you want to maximize your odds of drawing him early even if you risk having dupes. I like the one display of power. It makes your opponent have to respect the card while not flooding on that effect yourself.

Are there any changes you would make based on your recent experience? Personally I'd go with +1 ancestral shrine, -1 imperial storehouse for example.

I rarely play two drops that are not my standard two copies of Asako Tsuki, but he's been the next in line if I am planning to play a couple of cards to support Tsukune. He's a fine as a second string bushi.
The times I have played him, he was [continue reading]alright. Nothing spectacular, but he did good work drawing me a card or two over its lifespan. Sometimes you get to honor him with purity of spirit or Tsuki and he'll shine pretty brightly.

I feel this is way, way better out of Dragon than it is out of Phoenix. The Agatha line of shugenja has multiples that can go find katana of fire and some others that are just good out of the box like fire alchemist or doomed shugenja. Thanks for the nice comments. In order:
- I will mulligan away the attachments as much as I can as I am often spending my fate on buying a character on the first turn and think the events and feral ningyo are more important to find (doesn't hur [continue reading]t to improve illustrous forge). Dynasty mulligan depends on the opposition. I will try to find solemn scholar/prodigy of the waves and Secluded shrine if I happen to find one of the two in the flip. If I don't have either, I'll go with a 3 drop plus a 1 drop opening.
- I will pretty much always go first given the option. Ethereal dreamer and Ujina benefit from it pretty significantly.
- As mentioned above, I am frequently buying a 3 drop and a 1 drop on turn one, or a prodigy of the waves with 3 fate. I am also a fan of buying a couple of 1 drops with 2 fate each.
- When I own smuggler's Cove, I will definitely try it in this list. I want more movement options available to me.

This was just a fun idea I was working with, partially inspired by a local phoenix player who goes way more all in than I do. I have been playing a couple of games with it and think there are many improvements to make here.
Idea 1: Drop one ready for battle. It's not needed. Run the third Magnificent kimono instead.
Idea 2: Though it pains me, I think you could cut 1 of the fallen in battle for a card that helps my conflicts. I could see the same for the censures. You could probably lose one and play another card over it that helps me win conflicts.
Idea 3: I want the third ancestral shrine and think I should shave off a forgotten library for an ancestral shrine.

While I think my previously posted deck is much stronger, this one is quite fun. Between the two of them, adorned barcha is a stronger card by a lot, in particular because it helps me win conflicts beyond the stat boost. Not having access to embrace the void really hurts too. The fate situation is worse than in the other list, and I do feel that 2-3 fate you would gain from it by the third turn.

I am not so sure about including Uona. The five air cards in question are expensive and are not cards you can spew off for Uona's effect. The mirror's gaze wants a body that sticks around for a couple of turns. Cloud the mind is an important tool aga [continue reading]inst a select number of characters. These are limits that are put on Uona's ability.
There's also the question on what card you take out to add Uona in. I don't like her over any of the 1 cost characters in there because those are just better deals for your fate investment. You could perhaps play her over an acolyte, but that card is very powerful in its own right and dodges assassination.

Overall, I don't think she's a good fit here. I could see playing her if I had air cards like Benten's touch to work with. Perhaps for a different deck?

There are many ways you can build with the Crane splash. It depends on what you plan to do, and how you want to win the game.

The main draw of Shugenja is that they can participate in multiple conflicts. If we want to keep them, we shou [continue reading]ld play Against the Waves. If not, I think there are other dynasty choices that have better stats and/or abilities.
Phoenix Bushi are good in both conflict types nowadays thanks to purity of spirit. The courtiers are predominantly good at political, but they have more disruptive effects for your opponent’s characters.

At any rate, if you are intent on using multiple traits, we should ensure that we use cards that complement all three, so that we limit the amount of bad draws if we lack one of the traits.

You should start on the question of how you plan to win the game.

We can try to block participation of the opponent’s good characters. In that case, I would look for Formal invitation, Political Rival or Try again tomorrow, Radiant Orator, Sage of Gisei Toshi and Pacifism. This only needs Courtiers and leaves us with room for other things to do.
We can try to go over the top with bushi and use their send-home to remove opposition, and potentially threaten our opponent’s characters with A New Name along with For Shame to bow them out. If they dishonor instead, we follow up with Duel to the Death if it is a valuable character.

We can try to re-use honored characters, in which case Shugenja are the way to go. Crane does not have much to help us for this plan. They only provide Voice of Honor, which offers limited protection. Their unbow card is curry favor, which is very situational. The things I do like to do with Crane is to play their The Mirror’s Gaze, but I also believe Pillow Book is a really good card to splash from Crane.

I do not have the time to build a list for each of these suggestions, but I recommend that you look around and see what other IMS decks do. The main suggestions I have beyond all of the above is to trim your 2 cost characters to only the essentials. I usually run just two copies of Asako Tsuki for instance. Next, decide on how you will win and focus your build on that. Be sure to play enough support for each big character that you put in the deck. For example, if I play 3x Shiba Tsukune, you can be assured I will add a 1 and 3 cost bushi, two purity of spirit and two Finger of Jade to support her.

I am a firm believer that expensive characters need adequate support cards to make them shine. Currently, you are playing 5 big shugenja and 5 big bushi. You are running 5 support cards for bushi and 2 dynasty cards for your shugenja. Granted, the bu [continue reading]shi cards are easier to play courtesy of A New Name.

I think your shugenja need more support. Against the waves is such an easy card to fit, plus it takes advantage of your stronghold. The strongest thing to do with Isawa Mori Seido is to apply the glory to an honored character and unbowing that one so that you get the bonus multiple times.

The other potential issue is that you do not have many ways to honor your characters in the long-term in the conflict deck. I would always recommend a pair of Magnificent Kimono; They even like your steward of law.

Finally, Most of your cards are about just increasing stats on your characters. I have found that they will combat you with cards that bow, covert or send you home. I recommend taking either cards that allow for more movement (like the third favorable grounds) and cards that prevent messing with your big characters (like finger of jade). You should likely look into playing more of these effects yourself. Pacifism, Taryu-Jiai, Radiant Orator, Sage of Gisei Toshi and Ofushikai are each with significant downsides, but I feel like I need some of effects these offer. You may want to take some of the better effects out of Crane to complement your overall strategy, like duel to the death, issue a challenge, try again tomorrow and so on.

Haughty Magistrate is an interesting idea. Rather than utilizing movement, he's more a good target for Gajin Customs because I don't have that many characters that have 3 or more base glory.

The reason why he's not in here is because of [continue reading] a couple of factors:
- He is a poor defender.
- The deck has enough ways to win conflicts as the attacker.
- Feral Ningyo and Haughty Magistrate don't get along.

I think you can definitely try this by swapping one Shiba Yojimbo for a haughty magistrate. I think the better statline of Shiba Yojimbo and her protective effect are overall better. This is mainly because Haughty Magistrate is more replaceable with other powerful offensive tools than the Yojimbo's bubble shield.

I think Magnificent Kimono is pretty important for this deck. It is often a card that breaks open the match-up against Crane and Scorpion because it is a non-event that can honor my characters and does so multiple times per round. Crane especially do [continue reading]esn't like it because this is the card that can turn off their cancellation from when they have the voice of honor shields up. I would not like to dismiss the second copy and believe it is more important than the singleton ornate fan is.

As for Tadaka, I think he is brings a lot to certain matchups, like the matchup versus scorpion, unicorn and Crab. In each of those matchups you are sniping cards that are essential to their gameplan. I run two copies to increase the odds of drawing him early enough in those matchups. I play him for full retail the majority of the time. Often, all it takes is just passing my dynasty phase to buy him with 3 fate later. I did this in the game against Wouter described above. My flip versus his flip made it clear I would be better off banking fate to buy him. Wouter wasn't going to break any province, I only cared about the imperial favor and defending Shameful Display. I decided Tadaka is the better buy because I can play him after Wouter's options to mess with him are over and just grab the favor. If he went for shameful display I could honor Tadaka there.

I definitely think Tadaka in this style of deck is an important card. Disrupting hands is important, and on the other hand, I often can just break a province by dropping him late in the turn, attacking versus no defenders, attach a kimono and end up with an honored Tadaka for next round.
As for disguise: You are only occasionally doing this from a Fearsome Mystic. I think these two play well together. Fearsome mystic is usually also not something people defend against, so she often carries the magnificent kimono on her way in. Then, after I won the conflict, I disguise over her and have a 7/5 (or 9/7) ready monster at the ready.

Simply put, I go out of my way to play him when I think I need his effect or uniqueness. Other than that I just save up enough to buy him.

I always try to look for a spot to play Ofushikai. Usually you will want a second champion and tools to make the champion Phoenix. In here, it would frequently be a generic +2/+3 bonus, which is not nothing, but it sure is pricy.
So in short: [continue reading]It is a cool card to play in here given the density of uniques. The question is more on what to take out. I feel it is very greedy to play this over the singleton Ornate Fan, but that is the first card I would look at.
